Top 5 Places to Visit in Malaysia

Malaysia is one of my favorites country in the world. I travel to Malaysia several times a year. Malaysia has many wonderful places to visit, but these top five destinations are my absolute favorites. From <a href="http://just4traveler.blogspot.com/2014/08/free-things-to-do-in-kuala-lumpur.html">Kuala Lumpur</a> to Penang, Melaka (Mallaca) to Cameron Highlands and don't forget Langkawi - these <a href="http://just4traveler.blogspot.com/2014/08/top-5-places-to-visit-in-malaysia.html">five Malaysian places</a> are unique, interesting and with something to offer every <a href="http://just4traveler.blogspot.com/">traveler</a>.<br />

<b>Kuala Lumpur</b><br />

One of my favorite destinations in South East Asia, Kuala Lumpur is Malaysia's crowning jewel. Famous for landmarks like the KL Tower and Petronas Towers, as well as for its huge shopping malls (visit KLCC, the amazing mall at the base of the Petronas Towers or Berjaya Times Square, one of the largest malls I've ever seen). Kuala Lumpur also has an excellent zoo, an amazing variety of ethnic foods, friendly people and world-class museums. KL is also interesting for its mix of cultures (Malay, Chinese and Indian) and for the city itself, which is clean, beautiful and easy to get around.<br />

<b>Melaka (also known as Mallaca)</b><br />
<br />
My second favorite place in <a href="http://just4traveler.blogspot.com/search/label/Malaysia">Malaysia</a>, Melaka is around an hour and a half's drive from Kuala Lumpur. Melaka is well worth seeing because of the history of the town, The Portuguese were some of the first westerners to settle in Melaka and, still today, you can see the remains of their old churches and forts as well as the influence they had on this region of Malaysia. Also, don't miss going to Jalan Hang Jebat, also known as Jonker Street. Here, you'll see lots of antique shops, a little shop selling tiny Chinese shoes for women with bound feet, art galleries, coffee shops, craft stores and some excellent restaurants.<br />

<b>Penang</b><br />

One of the most popular destinations in Malaysia for Thais and people traveling from Thailand is Penang, as it's so close. Penang is one of the best places to visit in Malaysia as it's one of the most popular places for tourists too. A beautiful island, Penang is famous for its beautiful beaches, excellent restaurants, botanical gardens, a fun Snake Museum, and its British heritage (it used to be a British colony a couple of centuries ago). Penang is also famous for its many coffee shops and cafes, so don't miss trying the local 'Kopi' while you're there.<br />

<b>Cameron Highlands</b><br />

Cameron Highlands is famous for the silk trader, Cameron Highlands is also famous for its beautiful scenery, it's gorgeous tea plantations, a butterfly farm, strawberry farms and its many walking trails. Cameron Highlands is made up of eight different small towns, all pretty and all with something to offer. It's also popular with <a href="http://just4traveler.blogspot.com/">tourists</a> as the many small inns and guest houses in Cameron Highlands are fun places to stay. Only two hours from Kuala Lumpur, it's easy to get there by car or bus.<br />

Malaysia's beautiful 99 islands. The area known as Langkawi, is actually off the coast of Malaysia and is one of the most popular and best tourist destinations in south east <a href="http://just4traveler.blogspot.com/search/label/Asia">Asia</a>. Known for its gorgeous sandy beaches, beautiful scenery, fun nightlife, amazing seafood (and restaurants!), as well as world-class resort hotels and spas, Langkawi is the best place to visit in Malaysia if you just want to rest and relax. A weekend or a week in Langkawi will leave you feeling like a different person.<br />

Taman Negara: The World's Oldest Rainforest

In central peninsular <a href="http://just4traveler.blogspot.com/search/label/Malaysia">Malaysia</a>, <a href="http://just4traveler.blogspot.com/2014/08/taman-negara-worlds-oldest-rainforest.html">Taman Negara is the world's oldest rain forest</a> at 130 million years old. The jungle town is unbelievably relaxed, and the hiking is amazing. The jungle is home to tigers, elephants, lizards, monkeys, various cats and many other fascinating animals. If you are lucky and patient, you can see them. In Tamara Negara, get a trail map. It will show you the distances to the various hides and campgrounds. With a tent, you can camp in the woods for 1 Malaysian ringet per night per person (less than $0.30 US), and for 2 ringet, you can stay in a hide, a wooden shelter next to a salt lick. Since most animals are active at night, camping is the best way to see them.<br />

The town knows that the jungle trek is popular and offers necessary supplies for rent, such as a tent hiking boots, sleeping mat, and cooking stove. Cross the river from the town and register your itinerary at the ranger station. With a map and enough water, you are free to trek as far as you can; the park has hundreds of kilometers of trails. If you are particularly inclined and insane, you can hire a guide to lead you on a 7 day trek, and spend a week hauling around your food, supplies and water purification tablets (won't your friends be jealous?), and (hopefully) seeing wonders of nature most people will never see. On a 2 day trek, three of us saw peacocks, a couple lizards and interesting butterflies. We also heard a couple other creatures going through our garbage at night. If I go back I will do a longer trek.<br />

In the animal night trek, passengers ride in a jeep as a guide shines a powerful light in the trees to make the animals freeze. Our tour saw a snake, an ocelot, owls, and flying squirrels. I still recommend the trek over the jeep. River boat tours are relaxed but expensive.<br />
<br />
For accommodations, you can sleep in a dorm bed in the town for 10 ringet, or pitch a tent for 2 ringet. Across the river, the park-owned accommodations are posher and more western. Eat your delicious lunch and dinner on a river boat for about 3-5 US dollars. The internet café serves fruit shakes that hit the spot after a sweaty jungle trek. The biggest downside, however, is that this Muslim town only serves beer at the resort for too much money. Still, if you love nature and easy living, and can go with little beer and internet, you will love <a href="http://just4traveler.blogspot.com/2014/08/taman-negara-worlds-oldest-rainforest.html">Taman Negara</a>.</div>

The two giant Petronas Towers are a majestic site to see, and you can get a free view from the sky-bridge 1400 feet up. After soaking in the view, ride the elevator back down to ground level and take a separate elevator to our destination: the Galeri Petronas at level 3. Here you'll see many works of art from all over southeast Asia. They also have lectures and art classes, so check the schedule at Galeri Petronas. They also offer a collection of art books and resources. Open daily (except Monday) from 10am to 6pm, and until 8pm on holidays. Admission is always free.<br />
<br />
<b>Royal Malaysia Police Museum</b><br />
<br />
An unusual Free museum dedicated to the collection and study of weapons, uniforms, armored vehicles, and other items relating to crime prevention. Examine old documents and photos, and a variety of artifacts. Many exhibits have interactive touch screens. Located on Jalan Perdana near the Lake Gardens area, the museum is easy to get to by bus or taxi. Open 10am to 5:30 daily, but closed on Fridays.<br />
<br />
<b>Bukit Bintang Walk</b><br />
<br />
This is a fun street with many cafes and shops, night clubs and restaurants. There's a lot of foot traffic here, which is why they call it the Bintang Walk. Spend some time walking along Bukit Bintang, and enjoy the great view of the towers and the city. Go window shopping and eat some New Zealand ice cream. Stop into a cafe and try the cham (a mixture of coffee and tea). Despite the busy environment, it's a relaxing street, with lots of people reading books at the outdoor cafes.<br />

<b>Batu Caves</b><br />

Just north of KL are the Batu Caves, a beautiful landscape of limestone that protects several sacred Hindu temples. It's not far by taxi, and there are shuttle buses from the center of KL. Many hotels also offer tours. At the caves, a lot of walking is required, so make sure you're in good shape. It's worth the effort to see these beautiful temples and their surroundings. I found them to be breathtaking! Be careful of the monkeys in the area, and feed them bananas so they won't try for your camera and purse.<br />
<br />
Lake Gardens and Orchid Park (Taman Orkid) are free on weekdays. Take a taxi or bus to either, they are right next to each other. Enjoy the peaceful gardens and the beautiful orchids, take some photos and have a pleasant walk. You can even buy baby orchids for your own garden. The baby orchids will keep in special jar for a month if you're traveling long distance.<br />

<b>Craft Complex</b><br />
<br />
This complex covers a few blocks and includes the Craft Museum and a network of Malaysian craft stores. Silk, pewter, silver, and wood crafts are displayed, along with unique Malayan Batik paintings. The wood craft complex is the largest, comprising a small village. You can also learn about the history of songket weaving. Located on Jalan Conlay, the craft center is easily accessed by bus, taxi or monorail. The Museum is open every day from 8 am until 5pm. Some stores stay open later.<br />
<br />
Additionally, the Maybank Numismatic Museum is a Coin Museum on the first Floor of the Maybank Tower in the center of Kuala Lumpur. Take the sky-train to the Pudu LRT stop and walk a few minutes to the Tower. You'll get to see a good history of Malaya currency. Now you have a few days of free fun in KL.
